On October 20, 1944 Japanese soldiers stationed near Leyte awoke to the sounds of shelling from the U.S. Navy's 7th fleet. MacArthur had returned with an army. Over the next year the American troops swept across the Phillipines retaking the islands and freeing the imprisoned men.
